In many of these diaries, Samuel kept a Cash Account of his financial dealings for each month. It was a very simple accounting system that served him very well. These are his monthly entries for 1871.

  • Samuel received $658.18 in 1871. That’s equal to $16,077.50 in 2022.
  • His expenses were $382.43. That’s equal to $9,341.70 in 2022.
  • His net income for 1871 was $275.75. That’s equal to 6,735.80 in 2022.

Samuel and Helen lived on a farm where they grew most of their own food. Consequently, his net income was a fairly substantial amount for those days.

This year is a work in progress. The daily entries have not yet been transcribed and uploaded. We’re working on them!
